Thai Buddhist amulets (phra khrueang)

Meaning

Phra khrueang are pressed images of the Buddha, famous monks (Luang Pho Thuad, Somdej Toh), and deities such as Nang Kwak, made of sacred powders, clay, herbs, ash, metal or bone, and consecrated by monks in ceremonies.

Intent

Each is worn for specific powers: protection from danger and weapons (khong krapan), charm and popularity (metta), good business (Nang Kwak beckons customers), luck and safety. Several are worn at once in waterproof gold or steel cases.

Significance

Thai amulets are a vast economy and a serious hobby, with experts, magazines and authentication services. The 'Benjapakee' set of five most famous amulets is legendary, and the Somdej of Wat Rakhang made by Somdej Toh (d. 1872) is the most valuable.

History

Thai votive amulets derive from Dvaravati and Sukhothai votive tablets (7th–14th centuries). Modern consecrated amulets developed in the 19th century, and the market boomed from the 1980s.

Making yours
2–5 cm. Mix powder, plaster and herbs and press into a mould. Arched, rectangular or lotus shapes, often in a gold or steel waterproof case.
Southeast Asia: the tradition

Buddhist votive tablets pressed from clay to earn merit spread from India to Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Indonesia from the 7th century. In Thailand this grew into the most intense living amulet culture in the world: phra khrueang (sacred objects) consecrated by revered monks, graded by temple, batch and monk, and traded at huge markets such as Tha Prachan in Bangkok, where prices for famous pieces reach millions of baht. Alongside Buddhism run older animist and Brahmanic beliefs in invulnerability (khong krapan), charm (metta) and luck. The Philippines developed its own Catholic-folk anting-anting.
